Thank you for your interest in these British Water Ski qualifications for which JBWA run courses and examinations.
We offer the following courses either to train you for a British Water Ski qualification or to take the actual qualification you wish to gain:
Beginner Driver
This is a half day course which will take you from next to no experience behind the wheel of a boat to being able to take the Ski Boat Driver Award. The course integrates with the SBDA course over an extended day on the water. The cost, to include the SBDA Course and British Water Ski membership, is £250.
Refresher Driver
This short course is aimed at those drivers who have some experience but are perhaps a bit rusty, or would just like to regain some confidence. We use competition tournament boats for all our courses so if you are not familiar with this type of boat you may want some practice before your SBDA. Our charges for this are £30 for a 15 minutes sessions (to include assessment and an indication of how many more lessons will be needed), or £85 for 3 sessions.
The Ski Boat Driver Award course takes one day and costs £150. This includes British Water Ski membership, the exam fees and water time. You will need some driving experience with skiers, under supervision, and we can top this up and improve you, hopefully beyond the standard required for the award. When you come on the course please:
- Bring and have read the SBDA manual (normally attached with this file but if not it can be downloaded from the www.britishwaterski.org.uk )
- Complete the SBDA application form (either attached or can be downloaded from the BWS web site)
- Bring a wetsuit, towel & warm clothing - you will be getting out behind the boat
- Bring a notepad and pen
- 3 x Passport size photos
- The upgrade fee for the ICC (£7.00) if this is required
Skier & Rider Improvement Courses
There are skiing and riding standards that need to be met before you can pass your Water Ski and Wakeboard Instructor courses ? see below for these. If you are not quite up to standard we can help you get there. We guarantee to improve your ability and you can book these by phoning JBSki on 0870 6061270. The cost is £65 for 3 x 15 minute sessions with individual tuition. These are normally taken over half a day.
The Water Ski Instructor Course takes place over 2 days and costs £250 including skiing water time and the exam fees. We ask all trainee instructors to have:
- Some hours coaching/assisting - ideally these should be recorded in the log in the Instructor manual but do not worry if you have not done this.
- The ability to perform 6 connected, controlled wake crossings on one ski
The Wakeboard Instructor Course either takes place over 1 day following on from the Water Ski Instructor course (some elements are the same in terms of safety and teaching methods etc.) or as a standalone two day course. The one day upgrade costs £150 and the two day course is £250. Both include water time and the exam fees. We ask all trainee instructors to have:
- Some hours coaching/assisting - ideally these should be recorded in the log in the Instructor manual but do not worry if you have not done this.
- The ability to perform deep water & sitting starts, surface side slide, surface 180 and ollie 180, ride fakie and perform double wake jumps.
FOR BOTH WATER SKI & WAKEBOARD INSTRUCTOR COURSES before you come on the course please:
- Complete the relevant Instructor application form (either attached or available from the BWS web site)
- Have the passport sized photos required
- Complete the Criminal Records Bureau Check which is now a requirement for all BWS Instructors. Refer to: www.britishwaterski.org.uk/UKSKI/ for the details and carefully read the notes there and act on them. This process does take a while and BWS will not issue your qualification until the check is in place.
- Bring a valid First Aid Certificate (this can be sent after the course but BWS will not issue a certificate until they have had sight of this)
- To have completed the British Water Ski SBDA (most JBWA Instructor courses are preceded by an SBDA course)
- BWS cannot issue either of these qualifications unless all the above are in place.
- Bring and have read the Instructor manual (available from BWS £10)
- Bring a wetsuit, towel & warm clothing - you will be getting out behind the boat
- Bring a notepad and pen
We look forward to meeting you.
